Longevity biotech doesn't have a single commercial product on the market yet. It also has companies paying scientists $1 million a year to work on it. Here's what the field actually looks like right now, what the jobs pay, and where it's headed.

Why This Industry, Right Now

Altos Labs launched in 2022 with $3 billion behind it, backed by Jeff Bezos, Yuri Milner, and Arch Ventures. Its team includes Nobel laureate Shinya Yamanaka, and it has been recruiting university professors away from academia with salaries of $1 million a year or more.

Retro Biosciences, backed by Sam Altman, was valued at $1.8 billion as of May 2026. It's running a human clinical trial testing a pill designed to help Alzheimer's patients clear protein buildup in the brain, and its CEO said in mid-2026 that the trial is going well with no dose-limiting toxicities so far.

BioAge Labs is one of the few publicly traded companies in the space, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker BIOA since its 2024 IPO. It's currently running a Phase 2 trial combining its lead drug candidate with Eli Lilly's Zepbound for obesity in older adults.

Not every company in the space survives. Unity Biotechnology formally dissolved in 2025 after its eye treatment failed to outperform an existing drug in trials, laid off its entire workforce, and was delisted from Nasdaq. The field is genuinely early, and early means some of these bets don't pay off.

The anti-senescence therapy segment of the market is projected to reach $46.6 billion by 2033, growing at a compound annual rate of 6.5%. Broader definitions of the longevity biotech market that include epigenetic reprogramming put the number significantly higher.

The Jobs, and What They Pay

Cellular Biologist

Cellular biologists study how cells age, divide, and break down, which is the foundational science behind almost every longevity therapy in development. Entry-level pay starts around $42,500 to $45,000. Mid-career cellular biologists average $68,700 to $73,900, and experienced researchers in the field can earn up to $157,000.

Biochemist / Biotech Research Scientist

Biochemists run the lab work that turns a theory about aging into an actual drug candidate. The average biotech research scientist earns $130,117 a year, and pharmaceutical and biotech companies specifically pay a median of $222,039 for cell biology research scientist roles, the highest of any industry that employs this specialty.

Clinical Research Associate (Clinical Trial Researcher)

Clinical research associates run and monitor the human trials that decide whether a longevity drug actually works, managing everything from patient safety data to regulatory paperwork. Average pay is $99,000 to $114,000, with the pharma and biotech sector paying a median of $107,268, among the highest-paying industries for this role.

Computational Biologist / Bioinformatician

Computational biologists use code and machine learning to make sense of the genetic and cellular data these companies generate, and it's one of the fastest-growing entry points into the field for people with a software or data background rather than a pure lab background. Entry-level pay runs $90,000 to $115,000, mid-level $125,000 to $170,000, and senior computational biologists at top biotech companies earn $180,000 to $250,000 or more in hubs like the Bay Area, Boston, and San Diego.

The Growth Outlook

Biochemists, biophysicists, medical scientists, and biological technicians as a group are projected to grow 7% to 11% over the next decade, well above the 5% average growth rate for all US occupations. Biotech R&D specifically added 10,700 jobs in the first ten months of 2024 alone, a 3.7% increase that pushed the subsector to a record workforce of 303,000. Industry analysts expect 2026 to bring a leveling off of the layoffs that hit biotech in 2025, with some predicting modest headcount growth as interest rates ease and healthcare sentiment improves.

What To Point Your Kid Toward

None of these roles require betting on a single company surviving. They require a real science or technical background: chemistry, biology, biochemistry, or computer science with a biology minor. If there's a kid in your life still deciding what to study, cellular biology, biochemistry, clinical research, and computational biology are four different doors into the same fast-growing field, and none of them require knowing in advance which specific company wins.
