OpenAI introduced ChatGPT for Teachers, giving verified K-12 educators and school staff in the US free access to a secure ChatGPT workspace, admin controls for school and district leaders, and education-grade privacy protections built to meet FERPA requirements.

Why OpenAI built this.
Teachers are already some of the most active users of ChatGPT. Three in five teachers use an AI tool, and those who use one weekly report saving hours each week, time that can go back to students instead of prep and admin work. OpenAI's framing leans on that same idea: give teachers a workspace built around their actual job, not a stripped-down version of a consumer chatbot.
ChatGPT for Teachers is built for both educators and school leaders. Teachers get a secure space to adapt materials, get more out of prep time, and collaborate with peers. District leaders can bring their staff into one workspace with shared privacy, security, and compliance protections.
What's actually in it.
ChatGPT for Teachers runs on GPT-5.1, with unlimited messages across Instant, Auto, and Reasoning-Mini. It includes file uploads and apps with sync, file search, and deep research, voice mode and image generation, data analysis tools, web search, and memory for more personalized responses over time.
It connects to tools teachers already use: build presentations with Canva directly in ChatGPT, and pull lesson plans and files in from Google Drive or Microsoft 365 so every chat starts with your classroom context already loaded.
Core teaching skills:
Lesson and unit planning: hand ChatGPT your curriculum goals and get a full multi-week unit plan back, with guiding questions and hands-on activities mapped to each day.
Differentiated assignments: generate example responses across different skill levels for the same assignment, with a rationale for where each one falls.
Standards alignment: upload your curriculum and get the relevant academic standards, like ISTE, matched against it automatically.
Collaboration: build custom GPTs and shared templates with other teachers at your school, or co-plan lessons and presentations together in shared projects.
The examples above come directly from teachers already using ChatGPT in their classrooms, and are surfaced inside the workspace under the message composer.
Who it's for, and how to sign up.
ChatGPT for Teachers is for teachers, staff, school leaders, and district administrators at accredited U.S. K-12 schools and districts. It is not for students; student accounts and student-facing features may come later.
Verification runs through SheerID, OpenAI's third-party partner. Go to chatgpt.com/k12-verification with your school or district email, complete verification, and choose whether to create a new workspace or join one already tied to your district's domain. Workspaces are restricted to a single district; you can't mix educators from different districts in one workspace. District admins can additionally claim their domain and configure SSO and role-based access before inviting staff.
Once verified, access is entirely free through June 2027.
Privacy, and the AFT partnership.
Information shared with ChatGPT for Teachers is not used to train OpenAI's models by default. The workspace is built to help schools meet FERPA requirements and comes with a student data privacy agreement, on top of admin controls like SSO and role-based access for district leaders.
This builds on OpenAI's existing partnership with the American Federation of Teachers, which set out to equip 400,000 K-12 educators with practical AI skills through the National Academy for AI Instruction. AFT president Randi Weingarten has framed the stakes this way: "AI holds tremendous promise but huge challenges, and it's our job as educators to make sure AI serves our students and society, not the other way around. The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to harness it, set commonsense guardrails and put teachers in the driver's seat, teaching and learning can be enhanced."
Beyond the launch.
Alongside ChatGPT for Teachers, OpenAI is working with an initial cohort of districts, representing close to 150,000 teachers and staff, including Houston ISD, Fairfax County, Fulton County Schools, and Dallas ISD, to help shape how the product develops at scale. OpenAI is also releasing an AI Literacy Blueprint for school leaders and policymakers, and pointing teachers to a ChatGPT Foundations Course for K-12 Educators built with Common Sense Media.
